Breastfeeding Difficulties and Chiropractic

Breastfeeding Difficulties and Chiropractic

Modern birthing procedures, even those with seemingly minimal intervention, are known to cause
trauma and stress to the infant’s cranium and spine. In a leading pediatric textbook on manual therapy
for children, one author tells us, “When considering injuries and dysfunctions of the spine and its
associated structures, the significance of birth trauma is often underestimated, and the resulting
symptoms frequently misinterpreted.”

In the case of breastfeeding difficulty, as with many childhood disorders, the cause of the problem often
traces back to undetected bio-mechanical injuries to the spine and cranium at birth. The failure to
recognize these bio-mechanical injuries and their relationship to difficulty in breastfeeding leads to
incorrect conclusions and therefore, inadequate recommendations and treatments. Without real
solutions, mothers become discouraged, successful breastfeeding is not achieved, and women stop
trying out of frustration.

Breastfeeding is by far the best choice for infant feeding for numerous reasons. Significant research
shows that, from a nutritional, immunological, digestive, neurological, developmental, mental,
psychological, and emotional standpoint, there is no replacement. Today, more and more women are
choosing the healthy, natural benefits of breastfeeding. Exclusive breastfeeding is the
optimal feeding mode for an infant’s first 6 months of life. Many women initially plan to breastfeed for

that length of time, yet fall short because of difficulties that seem to have no solution. Many of
the care-providers they consult are unaware of the bio-mechanical disorders in the infant’s spines and
craniums that cause the difficulty in breastfeeding. This lack of knowledge leads to ineffective
recommendations with unsatisfactory results. In these instances, it is imperative that parents seek
family chiropractors who offer mothers and infants the care appropriate to their needs.

In 24 years of practice, it has been my experience that when infants presented in our office with any of
the indicated difficulties (see below), once evaluated and adjusted accordingly, they
responded favorably with chiropractic care. Normal function in the infant was restored and
breastfeeding continued without further complications and hindrances. Among other
numerous benefits of chiropractic care for infants, the ability to successfully breastfeed has lifelong
consequences for the baby’s future health potential. Including chiropractic care for your newborn may
very well be one of the most important choices you make in support of the family wellness lifestyle.

Some of the most common indicators of difficulty with breastfeeding are:
 Babies who cannot latch firmly
 Babies who can latch and not sustain sucking
 Babies who are unable to smoothly coordinate
suckling, swallowing, and breathing
 Babies who can feed in only one position
 Babies who seem dissatisfied when nursing or
who remain fussy and distressed throughout
the day
 Babies who chew and damage the mother’s
nipples
 Babies who may not feed any better from other
devices
 Babies who have the need to suck 24/7

How not to Pass your Traumas to your Offspring

How not to Pass your Traumas to your Offspring

The Nature vs. Nurture debate has been part of the conversation around how generational changes occur for quite some time.  Most experts speculate that there is a mix of both of these factors.  While psychologists and other people studying behavior can lean on modeling as a mechanism for how changes occur through “nurture” finding biologic mechanisms for behavior to prove the “nature” side of the debate have been more challenging.

Recent research at The University of Zurich is reporting a newly found biological mechanism for how behavior is passed down through sperm. The study focuses specifically on how traumatic experiences make changes in the second and third generations of mice.  They found that when mice are exposed to traumatic situations their offspring tend to demonstrate behaviors as if they, themselves, had been exposed to the trauma.

The mechanism for this occurs in a molecule called microRNA (sometimes called miRNA).  microRNA are smaller RNA molecules that are transcripted from the DNA.  They serve primarily in regulatory functions like controlling how many copies of a specific cell should be made.
Researchers found that when a mouse had been exposed to traumatic events the quantity and type of microRNA cells were altered from the population of mice that had not been traumatized.  They found these altered microRNA primarily in the blood, brain and sperm.  They also found metabolic variations in the second generation of the traumatized mice who had significantly lower blood sugar and insulin.

The researcher’s primary interest was to understand classifiable mental health issues but they did state they believed this was a mechanism that could prove to be in action outside of just mental disorders.

The field of Epigenetics has been popularized by Bruce Lipton in his book The Biology of Belief. Epigentics tells us that our genes are a blueprint for what may happen and that the way that we think, feel and believe has a significant impact on whether the gene that controls any single characteristic will actually express.  The summary soundbite for epigenetics is “your life is not controlled by your genes.”

This adds an interesting twist to this epigenetic conversation. Fundamentally it is true, the way we think, feel and believe impacts the genetic expression and yet, it seems, that we are genetically predisposed to certain perspectives, behavioral characteristics and habits based on the way our parents (father in this case) decided to think, feel and behave.
Looking at this from a Reorganizational perspective is especially interesting.  In Discover we see this “problem” as one more roadblock to stop us from experiencing happiness and success, in Transform we see it as one more roadblock to overcome and change into fuel to experience success and in Awaken, of course, we say we say “roadblock? What roadblock? All I see are gifts”

The amazing benefit of Reorganizational Healing and Living is that we have a framework to understand and transform these potentially damaging experiences.  We know that we are responsible for the way we think and feel and that has a specific outcome in our lives, the lives of those around us and the lives of our children.  But understanding this and having tools to consciously heal these possible traumas is critical.

Reorganizational Healing and Living provide opportunities for early detection and prevention of these traumas if they are lifestyle based. It also creates the opportunity to heal these traumas and allow the microRNA to resume normal function in the first, second or third generations.  This has profound positive implications for overall health and wellness of a family, lineage and society.
It has been said by Donald Epstein, developer of the Reorganizational Healing model, that when someone heals the effects ripple through time to affect many parts and times of their life.  This new research now shows us that when we are healing and helping others heal the beneficial effects may actually be rippling through generations.

How the trauma of life is passed down in SPERM, affecting the mental health of future generations
  • -The changes are so strong they can even influence a man's grandchildren
  • -They make the offspring more prone to conditions like bipolar disorder

The children of people who have experienced extremely traumatic events are more likely to develop mental health problems.
And new research shows this is because experiencing trauma leads to changes in the sperm.
These changes can cause a man’s children to develop bipolar disorder and are so strong they can even influence the man’s grandchildren.
Psychologists have long known that traumatic experiences can induce behavioural disorders that are passed down from one generation to the next.
However, they are only just beginning to understand how this happens.
Researchers at the University of Zurich and ETH Zurich now think they have come one step closer to understanding how the effects of traumas can be passed down the generations.
The researchers found that short RNA molecules – molecules that perform a wide range of vital roles in the body - are made from DNA by enzymes that read specific sections of the DNA and use them as template to produce corresponding RNAs.
Other enzymes then trim these RNAs into mature forms.
Cells naturally contain a large number of different short RNA molecules called microRNAs.
They have regulatory functions, such as controlling how many copies of a particular protein are made.

The researchers studied the number and kind of microRNAs expressed by adult mice exposed to traumatic conditions in early life and compared them with non-traumatised mice.
They discovered that traumatic stress alters the amount of several microRNAs in the blood, brain and sperm – while some microRNAs were produced in excess, others were lower than in the corresponding tissues or cells of control animals.
These alterations resulted in misregulation of cellular processes normally controlled by these microRNAs.
After traumatic experiences, the mice behaved markedly differently - they partly lost their natural aversion to open spaces and bright light and showed symptoms of depression.

These behavioural symptoms were also transferred to the next generation via sperm, even though the offspring were not exposed to any traumatic stress themselves.
The metabolisms of the offspring of stressed mice were also impaired - their insulin and blood sugar levels were lower than in the offspring of non-traumatised parents.
‘We were able to demonstrate for the first time that traumatic experiences affect metabolism in the long-term and that these changes are hereditary,’ said Professor Isabelle Mansuy.
‘With the imbalance in microRNAs in sperm, we have discovered a key factor through which trauma can be passed on.’
However, certain questions remain open, such as how the dysregulation in short RNAs comes about.
Professor Mansuy said: ‘Most likely, it is part of a chain of events that begins with the body producing too many stress hormones.’
Importantly, acquired traits other than those induced by trauma could also be inherited through similar mechanisms, the researcher suspects.

How can chiropractors benefit your health?

How can chiropractors benefit your health?

Back and neck pain are the chief complaints for which patients seek chiropractic help. Through manual spinal manipulation, chiropractic care is a holistic therapy that focuses on maintaining healthy musculoskeletal and nervous systems to ensure overall wellness.

Effectiveness
The research about chiropractic care is growing. According to the Annals of Internal Medicine, recent studies show that spinal manipulative therapy performed by a chiropractor, along with exercise, relieve neck pain more effectively than medication.
Furthermore, the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics reported that an integrated approach to health care -- including chiropractic care -- results in a 51.8 percent reduction in pharmaceutical costs and 43 percent fewer hospital admissions.
You should consider seeing a chiropractor if you experience frequent pain in your back, neck or joints, as well as headaches. This is especially so if intense soreness follows accidents, household chores or prolonged periods of poor posture.
Back and neck pain
Chiropractors are best known for safely and effectively treating acute back and neck pain, as well as headaches. Whereas a medical doctor might prescribe pain medicine, muscle relaxers or anti-inflammatory drugs, and an orthopedic doctor might suggest surgery, a chiropractor will treat your back problems by hand, through manipulation of the spine.
Nancy Elwartowski-Cooper, a pediatric and prenatal chiropractor, sees more and more referrals from medical doctors: "They (patients) are tired of the drugs and want answers to what is causing their problems."
Chiropractors bring the musculoskeletal structure into proper alignment. Chiropractors change the position of your body and apply pressure to particular points along the spine that are not properly aligned. This results in a popping noise similar to the one created when you crack your knuckles. The noise is created by a change in pressure in your joints as gas bubbles are released.
By adjusting the spine with their hands at particular pressure points, chiropractors unblock nerve energy and allow it to flow better down your spin and throughout your entire body. Repeated visits can, over time, realign your spine to optimize overall health.
Chiropractor Brian Elwartowski said the brain sends messages down the spinal cord and out through the nerves to the rest of your body. If certain nerves are squeezed by a twist in the spine, they won't function as well as if they were straight. "Chiropractic [care] allows the nerves to work at their most optimum ability," he said, "allowing the body to heal at its optimum ability."
Treatment plan
Many chiropractors seek to care for the whole person, from general wellness to disease prevention. They examine every patient, not only for the reason of their visit but also their level of health. After diagnosis, a chiropractor develops a treatment plan.
Keith Overland, president of the American Chiropractic Association, said, "This may include combinations of chiropractic manipulation, physical therapy and rehabilitative procedures for many musculoskeletal problems."
Some chiropractors provide nutrition advice, exercise recommendations, ergonomic and lifestyle counseling and so on. The successful management of chronic conditions may require a combination of these major components. This holistic approach can reduce the need for potentially addictive pain medication or invasive surgery.

The Webster Technique: A Sought Out Technique for Pregnant Women

The Webster Technique: A Sought Out Technique for Pregnant Women

You have probably heard about the Webster Technique-- the chiropractic technique used in pregnancy to help optimize the mother's pelvic function. It has been widely covered on natural birthing sites, and has become a conversation piece in the pregnancy circles, perhaps your doctor of chiropractic has discussed it with you as well.

The Webster Technique, discovered by Dr. Larry Webster, in 1978, founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), is a specific chiropractic adjustment to eliminate sacral misalignment and improve nerve system function. He developed it as a specific sacral adjustment for pregnant women to help balance pelvic muscles and ligaments and potentially improve birth outcome. The first woman who came into his practice and had this technique applied was pregnant with a breech baby. Shortly after beginning care, the baby turned to a head down position. Dr. Webster continued to offer this adjustment for all pregnant mothers in his practice. For those presenting breech, he claimed a 95% rate of these babies assuming a more optimal positioning for birth. This led to great interest by chiropractors, birth providers and mothers seeking options for safer, easier natural births.
With the growing amount of interventions pregnant
Family Wellness First
women are exposed to during pregnancy and birth, it is becoming harder and harder for women to have safe, natural childbirths. At the same time, with the increasing awareness of the potential harm and lack of evidence to support these interventions, women are seeking health care options in their pregnancy that support natural childbirth.
The World Health Organization (WHO) proposed 15% as the highest acceptable limit for cesarean section rates. Currently, the C-section rate has risen to mid-30% in the US. In some areas, the C- section rate is as high as 90%! Preliminary findings are showing that chiropractic care throughout pregnancy improves the mother’s overall function, her quality of life and may contribute to easier, safer births with less intervention. Decreasing the number of caesareans by minimizing the potential for dystocia with chiropractic care is a strategy that will have a wide range of Public Health impact.
The Webster Technique is similar to many chiropractic sacral adjustments. First there is an analysis to confirm sacral alignment. Then there is a light force thrust applied to the sacrum for correction. The adjustment is gentle and effective in establishing alignment in the pelvis which is of course imperative for safer, easier more natural births.
Although best known for its use in pregnancy, the Webster Technique is a valuable chiropractic adjustment that has been shown to improve function in all populations.
Because of its potential to facilitate easier, safer deliveries for both mother and baby, many birth care providers and mothers are actively seeking doctors of chiropractic with the skills in this technique.

Questions Parents Frequently Ask About Chiropractic for Children
Why? Children are as susceptible to trauma in their spines from various activities and events. These micro-traumas can misalign the vertebrae of the spine, placing pressure on their spinal nerves and therefore decreasing their bodies’ ability to function normally. Although symptoms, such as pain and malfunction may not show up for years, injury to their vital nervous systems can have a lifetime of damaging effects.

When? Children should be checked right after birth because of the possible injurious effects of interventions in the birth process. Even the most natural births may be traumatic to the infant’s nervous system, affecting their overall health. Numerous clinical reports reveal that many children who experience symptoms of colic, ear infections and asthma have spinal misalignments impairing their nervous system function. Early detection and correction by a doctor of chiropractic is a safe way to improve your child’s overall health and wellbeing.

Does it Hurt? Chiropractors who offer care for children use very specific, gentle techniques adapted to the infant or child’s specific needs. On the very young, the adjustment is as light as a finger touch. Doctors who are ICPA members take advanced classes and contribute to research specific to chiropractic care for pregnant mothers, infants and children, to enhance their skills in this field.
