Normal, Healthy Childbirth for Women & Families

Normal, Healthy Childbirth for Women & Families:

What You Need to Know

A woman’s guide to understanding normal, healthy birth and how it can improve the health of her baby and her health. Critical information to help women make informed decisions and avoid possibly unnecessary and expensive medical interventions, such as cesarean sections.

CHILDBIRTH TODAY

Since 1996, the World Health Organization has called for eliminating unnecessary intervention in childbirth. Yet in the US, birth interventions have reached epidemic proportions. Sadly, there is a lack of resources available to women to help them achieve their goals of a normal, safe, and healthy birth.

The norm for birth in the US today includes the use of technology and interventions that are not proven to benefit healthy women and babies during childbirth.

More than half of women receive medication to start or speed up their labors. This requires additional monitoring and interventions to treat possible

side effects, and can result in increased use of pain medication including epidurals.

One-third of US women deliver by cesarean section, a major abdominal surgery that has the potential for serious short- and long-term health consequences for both you and your baby.1

Often, vaginal birth is not an option for women who have already had a cesarean section.

If a woman receives care that she feels is traumatic or disrespectful, it affects her physical and emotional health, and interrupts the critical early bonding period with her baby.

UNDERSTANDING NORMAL, HEALTHY CHILDBIRTH

Normal, healthy birth is a safe process that includes labor, birth, and the first hour after birth for both the mom and her baby. It does not routinely require medical intervention.

Characteristics of normal labor, birth and the first hour after birth include:

◆◆Labor starts and progresses on its own.

u   The process is supported by physical and psychological factors that promote effective labor.

u   Labor results in a vaginal birth with normal blood loss.

u   The mother and her baby stay together after birth, with the baby remaining directly on her skin.

u   Breastfeeding begins right away.

YOUR BABY & YOUR BODY DURING A NORMAL, HEALTHY BIRTH

During normal, healthy birth, your body releases hor-mones that help you labor effectively, cope with pain, and bond with your baby. These hormones also help your baby transition to life outside of the womb, main-tain a normal body temperature, breastfeed successfully, and bond more effectively.

When labor progresses naturally on its own, there is less chance that your baby will have difficulties during labor or that you will need a vacuum, forceps, or a cesarean birth.

A normal, healthy labor and birth occur as a result of the mother and baby’s natural abilities. This type of birth is more likely to be safe and healthy because the process occurs without unnecessary interventions.

Some women and babies have complications that require interventions to have a safe and healthy outcome. Supporting normal, healthy labor and birth continues to benefit these women and their babies as well.

DISRUPTIONS TO NORMAL, HEALTHY BIRTH

Many things can disrupt the normal process of birth. Some examples to watch for:

◆◆  Medications to induce or speed up labor.

◆◆  Any environment that isn’t private or comfortable, or where people aren’t present to offer continuous support as desired.
◆◆  Time limits on the progress of labor.

◆◆  Restrictions on food and drink.

◆◆  Pain medications, epidurals, or anesthesia.

◆◆  Episiotomy.

◆◆  Cesarean, vacuum or forceps delivery.

◆◆  Early cutting of the umbilical cord before it has stopped pulsating.

◆◆  Separation of you and your baby after birth.

◆◆  Any situation where you feel threatened or unsupported.

BENEFITS OF A NORMAL, HEALTHY BIRTH

A normal, healthy birth provides many important benefits to your baby and you, such as:

◆◆  Achieving better overall health for your baby.

◆◆  Enabling your baby to successfully adapt to life outside the womb.

◆◆  Feeling physically and emotionally well and confident as mothers.

◆◆  Being better able to respond to your baby’s needs.

In addition to both of you, your family and society also benefit from a normal, healthy birth. As more women experience normal labor and birth, the view of birth will change to one of wellness, rather than illness. It also helps to
ensure that a woman and her healthcare provider act as partners, sharing decision making and responsibility.

HAVING A NORMAL, HEALTHY BIRTH

Many things can influence your ability to have a normal, healthy birth without intervention. These include:

◆◆  Your overall good health and physical fitness.

◆◆  Your knowledge and confidence about birth

(including cultural beliefs and practices and what you’ve been taught about birth).

◆◆  Having the chance to make informed decisions about your birth with your healthcare provider.
◆◆  Having access to a healthcare system, healthcare provider, and setting that supports you and helps meet your goal.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT
HEALTHCARE PROVIDER

Your healthcare provider, including midwives, can increase your confidence and address your concerns about giving birth. She or he should:

◆◆  Be committed to helping you learn about the birth process, while providing you with information so that you can make the best decisions for you and your baby.
◆◆  Allow you enough time to make decisions without feeling pressured.

◆◆  Know how to help you cope with pain in labor without using medications, and should assure your comfort, dignity and privacy.
◆◆  Respect your cultural beliefs and preferences.

◆◆  Have the education, knowledge, skills, and confidence to help you achieve your goals.

NORMAL BIRTH AND YOU | PAGE 3

CHOOSING THE RIGHT BIRTH SETTING

The location that you choose for birth should have policies in place to support normal, healthy birth. These policies should allow you to:

◆◆  Go into labor spontaneously and not allow induc-tion of labor or the use of Pitocin to speed up your labor, without a compelling medical reason.
◆◆  Eat and drink during labor, if you want to.

◆◆  Move around freely in labor.

◆◆  Give birth in whatever position you feel comfortable.

◆◆  Receive support from people you choose.

Unless there is a compelling medical reason, there is no need to be attached to an electronic fetal monitor. You should be given the option of having your baby’s heartbeat listened to at regular intervals.

MIDWIVES WORK COLLABORATIVELY TO SUPPORT NORMAL, HEALTHY BIRTH

Midwives are experts in supporting women in normal, healthy childbirth. Together with healthcare providers, policy makers, educators, researchers, and of course women, we are working collaboratively to educate all those impacted by childbirth. As a team, we are leading the way to:

◆◆  Encourage all birth settings to adopt supportive policies.

◆◆  Raise consumer awareness.

◆◆  Increase the availability of midwifery care for all women.

◆◆  Educate all healthcare providers about the benefits of this process.

◆◆  Continue research efforts to support these goals.

New Workshop!!!!

Chiropractic boosts immunity

Chiropractic boosts immunity

(NaturalNews) The nervous system and immune system are hardwired and work together to create optimal responses for the body to adapt and heal appropriately. Neural dysfunctions due to spinal misalignments are stressful to the body and cause abnormal changes that lead to a poorly coordinated immune response. Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to boost the coordinated responses of the nervous system and immune system.

The autonomic nervous system is hardwired into the lymphoid organs such as the spleen, thymus, lymph nodes, and bone marrow that produce the body's immune response. Growing evidence is showing that immune function is regulated in part by the sympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system.

Subluxation is the term for misalignments of the spine that cause compression and irritation of nerve pathways affecting organ systems of the body. Subluxations are an example of physical nerve stress that affects neuronal control. According to researchers, such stressful conditions lead to altered measures of immune function & increased susceptibility to a variety of diseases.

Inflammatory based disease is influenced by both the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems. Nerve stimulation directly affects the growth and function of inflammatory cells. Researchers found that dysfunction in this pathway results in the development of various inflammatory syndromes such as rheumatoid arthritis and behavioral syndromes such as depression. Additionally, this dysfunctional neuro-endo-immune response plays a significant role in immune-compromised conditions such as chronic infections and cancer.

Wellness based chiropractors analyze the spine for subluxations and give corrective adjustments to reduce the stress on the nervous system. A 1992 research group found that when a thoracic adjustment was applied to a subluxated area the white blood cell (neutrophil) count collected rose significantly.

In 1975, Ronald Pero, Ph.D., chief of cancer prevention research at New York's Preventive Medicine Institute and professor in Environmental Health at New York University, began researching the most scientifically valid ways to estimate individual susceptibility to various chronic diseases. He has conducted a tremendous amount of research in this area that includes over 160 published reports in peer reviewed journals.

Pero and his colleagues discovered that various DNA-repairing enzymes could be significantly altered following exposure to carcinogenic chemicals. He found strong evidence that an individual's susceptibility to cancer could be determined by these enzymes. Lack of those enzymes, Pero said, 'definitely limits not only your lifespan, but also your ability to resist serious disease consequences.'

Pero was fascinated by the relationship cancer-inducing agents had on the endocrine system. Since the nervous system regulates hormone balance, he hypothesized that the nervous system had to also have a strong influence on one's susceptibility to cancer.

To support this argument he found a substantial amount of literature linking various kinds of spinal cord injuries and cancer. Pero found that these injuries led to a very high rate of lymphomas and lymphatic leukemias. This understanding led Pero to consider Chiropractic care as a means of reducing the risk of immune breakdown and disease.

Pero's team measured 107 individuals who had received long-term Chiropractic care. The chiropractic patients were shown to have a 200% greater immune competence than people who had not received chiropractic care, and a 400% greater immune competence than people with cancer or serious diseases. Interestingly, Pero found no decline with the various age groups in the study demonstrating that the DNA repairing enzymes were just as present in long-term chiropractic senior groups as they were in the younger groups.

Pero concluded, 'Chiropractic may optimize whatever genetic abilities you have so that you can fully resist serious disease...I have never seen a group other than this show a 200% increase over normal patients.'

How not to Pass your Traumas to your Offspring

How not to Pass your Traumas to your Offspring

The Nature vs. Nurture debate has been part of the conversation around how generational changes occur for quite some time.  Most experts speculate that there is a mix of both of these factors.  While psychologists and other people studying behavior can lean on modeling as a mechanism for how changes occur through “nurture” finding biologic mechanisms for behavior to prove the “nature” side of the debate have been more challenging.

Recent research at The University of Zurich is reporting a newly found biological mechanism for how behavior is passed down through sperm. The study focuses specifically on how traumatic experiences make changes in the second and third generations of mice.  They found that when mice are exposed to traumatic situations their offspring tend to demonstrate behaviors as if they, themselves, had been exposed to the trauma.

The mechanism for this occurs in a molecule called microRNA (sometimes called miRNA).  microRNA are smaller RNA molecules that are transcripted from the DNA.  They serve primarily in regulatory functions like controlling how many copies of a specific cell should be made.
Researchers found that when a mouse had been exposed to traumatic events the quantity and type of microRNA cells were altered from the population of mice that had not been traumatized.  They found these altered microRNA primarily in the blood, brain and sperm.  They also found metabolic variations in the second generation of the traumatized mice who had significantly lower blood sugar and insulin.

The researcher’s primary interest was to understand classifiable mental health issues but they did state they believed this was a mechanism that could prove to be in action outside of just mental disorders.

The field of Epigenetics has been popularized by Bruce Lipton in his book The Biology of Belief. Epigentics tells us that our genes are a blueprint for what may happen and that the way that we think, feel and believe has a significant impact on whether the gene that controls any single characteristic will actually express.  The summary soundbite for epigenetics is “your life is not controlled by your genes.”

This adds an interesting twist to this epigenetic conversation. Fundamentally it is true, the way we think, feel and believe impacts the genetic expression and yet, it seems, that we are genetically predisposed to certain perspectives, behavioral characteristics and habits based on the way our parents (father in this case) decided to think, feel and behave.
Looking at this from a Reorganizational perspective is especially interesting.  In Discover we see this “problem” as one more roadblock to stop us from experiencing happiness and success, in Transform we see it as one more roadblock to overcome and change into fuel to experience success and in Awaken, of course, we say we say “roadblock? What roadblock? All I see are gifts”

The amazing benefit of Reorganizational Healing and Living is that we have a framework to understand and transform these potentially damaging experiences.  We know that we are responsible for the way we think and feel and that has a specific outcome in our lives, the lives of those around us and the lives of our children.  But understanding this and having tools to consciously heal these possible traumas is critical.

Reorganizational Healing and Living provide opportunities for early detection and prevention of these traumas if they are lifestyle based. It also creates the opportunity to heal these traumas and allow the microRNA to resume normal function in the first, second or third generations.  This has profound positive implications for overall health and wellness of a family, lineage and society.
It has been said by Donald Epstein, developer of the Reorganizational Healing model, that when someone heals the effects ripple through time to affect many parts and times of their life.  This new research now shows us that when we are healing and helping others heal the beneficial effects may actually be rippling through generations.

How the trauma of life is passed down in SPERM, affecting the mental health of future generations
  • -The changes are so strong they can even influence a man's grandchildren
  • -They make the offspring more prone to conditions like bipolar disorder

The children of people who have experienced extremely traumatic events are more likely to develop mental health problems.
And new research shows this is because experiencing trauma leads to changes in the sperm.
These changes can cause a man’s children to develop bipolar disorder and are so strong they can even influence the man’s grandchildren.
Psychologists have long known that traumatic experiences can induce behavioural disorders that are passed down from one generation to the next.
However, they are only just beginning to understand how this happens.
Researchers at the University of Zurich and ETH Zurich now think they have come one step closer to understanding how the effects of traumas can be passed down the generations.
The researchers found that short RNA molecules – molecules that perform a wide range of vital roles in the body - are made from DNA by enzymes that read specific sections of the DNA and use them as template to produce corresponding RNAs.
Other enzymes then trim these RNAs into mature forms.
Cells naturally contain a large number of different short RNA molecules called microRNAs.
They have regulatory functions, such as controlling how many copies of a particular protein are made.

The researchers studied the number and kind of microRNAs expressed by adult mice exposed to traumatic conditions in early life and compared them with non-traumatised mice.
They discovered that traumatic stress alters the amount of several microRNAs in the blood, brain and sperm – while some microRNAs were produced in excess, others were lower than in the corresponding tissues or cells of control animals.
These alterations resulted in misregulation of cellular processes normally controlled by these microRNAs.
After traumatic experiences, the mice behaved markedly differently - they partly lost their natural aversion to open spaces and bright light and showed symptoms of depression.

These behavioural symptoms were also transferred to the next generation via sperm, even though the offspring were not exposed to any traumatic stress themselves.
The metabolisms of the offspring of stressed mice were also impaired - their insulin and blood sugar levels were lower than in the offspring of non-traumatised parents.
‘We were able to demonstrate for the first time that traumatic experiences affect metabolism in the long-term and that these changes are hereditary,’ said Professor Isabelle Mansuy.
‘With the imbalance in microRNAs in sperm, we have discovered a key factor through which trauma can be passed on.’
However, certain questions remain open, such as how the dysregulation in short RNAs comes about.
Professor Mansuy said: ‘Most likely, it is part of a chain of events that begins with the body producing too many stress hormones.’
Importantly, acquired traits other than those induced by trauma could also be inherited through similar mechanisms, the researcher suspects.
